One of the biggest misconceptions about cruising is that it's only for people with a lot of money.

In reality, some of our most affordable vacations have been cruises.

When you stop and think about it, a cruise includes your accommodations, transportation between destinations, meals, entertainment, pools, activities, and ocean views—all wrapped into one vacation package.

In many cases, a cruise can cost less than a traditional land vacation.

Over the years, I've learned a few ways to stretch our travel budget without sacrificing the experience. Here are some of my favorite money-saving cruise tips.

Book During Wave Season

If you've never heard of Wave Season, you're not alone.

Wave Season typically runs from January through March and is often considered the biggest cruise booking season of the year.

Cruise lines frequently offer promotions such as:

• Reduced fares

• Onboard credit

• Free drink packages

• Cabin upgrades

• Reduced deposits

If you're planning a cruise, it's worth keeping an eye on prices during this time of year.

Consider Traveling During Off-Peak Times

One thing I've noticed over the years is that cruise prices often drop when kids are back in school.

Some of the best deals I've seen have been during:

• January and February

• September and October

• Early December

• Certain weeks in May

Many travelers avoid fall cruising because it's hurricane season, but cruise lines do an excellent job of adjusting itineraries when necessary. As a result, you can sometimes find surprisingly good deals.

Don't Overlook Inside Cabins

Everyone loves the idea of a balcony cabin, but if you're cruising on a budget, an inside cabin can save you a significant amount of money.

The truth is that most people spend very little time in their cabin.

You'll likely be:

• Exploring ports

• Enjoying the pool deck

• Watching shows

• Eating

• Relaxing around the ship

One unexpected benefit of an inside cabin is the darkness. If you're someone who enjoys sleeping in, those rooms can be incredibly restful.

Be Careful With Guaranteed Cabins

Cruise lines often offer what's called a "guaranteed" cabin.

You choose the cabin category, but the cruise line chooses the exact location.

Sometimes passengers receive a wonderful upgrade.

Other times, they end up with a cabin location they wouldn't have chosen themselves.

If saving money is your top priority, a guaranteed cabin can be a great option. However, if cabin location matters to you, you may prefer selecting your own room.

Choose Cruise Lines Carefully

Not every cruise line is priced the same.

Some of the cruise lines that frequently offer excellent value include:

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival often offers some of the lowest cruise fares available, especially on shorter Caribbean sailings.

Watch Your Onboard Spending

A low cruise fare can quickly become expensive if you're not careful.

A few simple ways to save money onboard include:

• Skip specialty dining if you're happy with the included restaurants.

• Think carefully before purchasing a drink package.

• Take advantage of free entertainment.

• Use complimentary beverages like water, iced tea, lemonade, and regular coffee.

• Set a budget before you board.

One area where I don't recommend cutting corners is travel documents and important travel essentials. I always keep our passports, cruise documents, medications, and other important items in my carry-on bag so they stay with me throughout the trip.

Explore Ports on Your Own

Cruise line excursions can be wonderful, but they're not always necessary.

Many ports are easy to explore independently.

Before your cruise, spend some time researching:

• Public beaches

• Local transportation

• Walking tours

• Shopping areas

• Free attractions

Just remember to allow plenty of time to return to the ship before all aboard time.

Final Thoughts

Some of our favorite cruise memories didn't come from the most expensive trips. They came from finding a great deal, getting onboard, and enjoying the adventure.
