If I had to choose my favorite cruise port after more than 30 cruises, Cozumel would be at the top of the list.
I've visited Cozumel more times than I can count, and while the island has changed over the years, it's still one of those places I'm always happy to see on an itinerary.
For me, Cozumel has the perfect combination of beautiful water, friendly people, shopping, restaurants, beaches, and excursions. Whether you want a relaxing day or an active adventure, there's usually something for everyone.
The Water Is Absolutely Gorgeous
One of the first things you'll notice when your ship arrives in Cozumel is the incredible color of the water.
The shades of turquoise and blue are stunning, especially on a sunny day. No matter how many times I visit, I still find myself stopping to admire the view as we pull into port.
If you're a beach lover, snorkeler, or scuba diver, Cozumel is famous for its crystal-clear water and beautiful reefs.
Great Shopping Near the Port
Cozumel is one of my favorite ports for shopping.
You'll find everything from souvenirs and T-shirts to jewelry, local crafts, vanilla, tequila, and Mexican artwork. Many of the shopping areas are within walking distance of the cruise terminals, making it easy to spend a few hours browsing without needing transportation.
Even if you're not planning to buy anything, it's fun to wander through the shops and soak up the atmosphere.
Plenty of Excursion Options
One reason Cozumel remains so popular is the variety of excursions available.
Some of the most popular activities include:
Beach breaks
Snorkeling tours
Catamaran cruises
Jeep tours
Mayan ruins excursions
Dolphin encounters
Food and tequila tastings
Swimming with stingrays
Whether you're traveling with kids, a group of friends, or just looking for a relaxing beach day, there's usually an excursion that fits your style.
A Stop at Fat Tuesday's
One of our favorite places to visit is Fat Tuesday's.
It's a fun spot to grab a cold beer, order some nachos, and enjoy a little people-watching. Vacation mode tends to bring out everyone's adventurous side, and sometimes the entertainment is completely free.
Let's just say we've witnessed a few enthusiastic dance performances over the years that probably seemed like a great idea at the time.
Those are the moments that become cruise memories.
Why I Keep Going Back
Some cruise ports are nice to visit once.
Cozumel is different.
Every visit feels a little different depending on who you're traveling with, what excursion you choose, or whether you decide to spend the day exploring, shopping, relaxing on the beach, or simply enjoying the waterfront atmosphere.
Even after all these years, I still look forward to seeing Cozumel on an itinerary.
That's probably the best compliment I can give any cruise destination.
Thinking About a Caribbean Cruise?
If you're planning your first cruise or looking for your next Caribbean getaway, there's a good chance Cozumel will be one of the ports you'll visit.
And if it is, don't be surprised if it becomes one of your favorites too.
