How to Get a Free Cruise: Legitimate Ways to Sail for Less

Free cruise?

That was pretty much my reaction the first time I started hearing people talk about getting complimentary cruises.

Wait...people are actually getting cruises for free?

As it turns out, yes.

There are legitimate programs that can dramatically reduce the price of a cruise—and in some cases bring the actual cruise fare all the way down to $0.

Some people receive complimentary cruise offers based on their casino play. Others earn cruise benefits through loyalty programs such as MGM Rewards. There are even free mobile games that let you accumulate loyalty points that may be redeemed for cruise rewards.

And some travelers qualify for complimentary cruise fares simply because of their profession or service.

But before you start packing your suitcase, there's one important catch:

A free cruise fare does not mean a completely free vacation.

You'll usually still have some expenses to pay.

Let's look at the legitimate ways people are getting free and heavily discounted cruises—and which ones might actually work for you.

Are Free Cruises Actually Real?

Yes—but the word free needs a little explanation.

When a cruise line or rewards program offers a complimentary cruise, it's usually referring to the cruise fare or cabin, not every expense associated with the vacation.

Depending on the offer, you may still pay for:

  • Taxes and port expenses

  • Gratuities

  • Transportation to the cruise port

  • Pre- or post-cruise hotels

  • Drinks

  • Wi-Fi

  • Specialty dining

  • Shore excursions

  • Cabin upgrades

  • Other onboard purchases

There may also be restrictions involving the ship, sailing date, cruise length, cabin category, or number of passengers.

That doesn't mean these offers aren't worthwhile.

If an offer eliminates hundreds—or potentially thousands—of dollars in cruise fare, that's real savings.

You simply need to understand exactly what's included before calling the vacation free.

1. Cruise Casino Programs

This is probably the method you've seen people talking about most often on TikTok, YouTube, and cruise forums.

People gamble in the casino during a cruise and later start receiving offers for discounted or complimentary cruises.

Yes, this really happens.

Cruise casinos track eligible play, and casino loyalty programs can reward players with benefits that may include FreePlay, drinks, onboard perks, discounted future cruises, and complimentary cruise offers.

But there's an important misconception here.

It's generally not as simple as:

“Lose $500 in the casino and they'll give you a free cruise.”

Casino programs evaluate your play using factors such as the games you play, how much you wager, and how long you play. Different cruise lines also operate their casino programs differently.

And I would never recommend gambling more money simply because you're trying to earn a cruise.

If you already enjoy gambling, getting future cruise offers can be a fantastic bonus.

But losing $2,000 trying to earn a $1,000 cruise isn't exactly a travel hack.

We'll cover how casino tracking, points, comps, and complimentary cruise offers actually work in a separate guide.

2. Earn Cruise Rewards Playing Free Games

This may be the most surprising method of all.

You don't necessarily have to gamble real money to work toward cruise rewards.

PLAYSTUDIOS operates a collection of free-to-play mobile games connected to its myVIP/playAWARDS rewards ecosystem.

Players can accumulate loyalty points while playing participating games and redeem those points for available real-world rewards.

And those rewards can include cruise offers.

The games aren't limited to traditional casino-style games, either. PLAYSTUDIOS offers both casino-style and casual games, which means you don't necessarily have to be interested in gambling to participate.

Cruise partners and available rewards can change, so you shouldn't assume that a particular cruise line, ship, or sailing will always be available.

But the basic concept is legitimate:

Play free games → earn loyalty points → redeem available points for real-world rewards that can include cruises.

And yes, this one deserves an entire article of its own.

3. MGM Rewards Can Include Cruise Benefits

Already participate in MGM Rewards?

You may have another route to cruise discounts and complimentary sailings.

MGM Rewards has a partnership with Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises that provides qualifying members with cruise-related benefits.

Depending on your MGM Rewards tier, benefits can include things such as cruise offers, onboard casino FreePlay, stateroom savings, onboard credit, and annual cruise benefits.

That means someone who already visits MGM properties or participates in MGM Rewards could have cruise benefits available without even realizing it.

MGM also offers rewards credit cards that allow cardholders to earn within the MGM Rewards ecosystem through eligible spending.

Opening a credit card doesn't automatically earn you a free cruise, of course. But for someone who already participates in MGM Rewards, the cards can be another piece of the overall rewards strategy.

We'll break down MGM tiers, cruise benefits, credit-card earning, and the Royal Caribbean/Celebrity partnership in a separate guide.

Even when your cruise fare is free, getting to the port usually isn't.

4. Margaritaville at Sea Heroes Sail Free

And here's a completely different way to qualify for a free cruise—without gambling or earning loyalty points at all.

Margaritaville at Sea offers its Heroes Sail Free program with eligibility verification through GOVX.

Eligible groups currently include military members, first responders, educators, medical personnel, government employees, and other qualifying community heroes.

After verifying eligibility through GOVX, qualifying travelers can access special Heroes offers.

On select sailings, the current program can provide $0 cruise fares for the first and second guests in eligible interior cabins.

Availability and restrictions apply, and taxes, fees, port expenses, gratuities, and other purchases remain additional.

And this isn't something I've only read about online.

I've personally gone through the GOVX verification process and used the Heroes Sail Free benefit for one of our Margaritaville at Sea cruises.

We still paid taxes, port charges, gratuities, and anything extra we purchased.

But eliminating the cruise fare itself can still make for an incredibly inexpensive getaway.

We'll walk through exactly how the program works, who may qualify, GOVX verification, restrictions, and what you should expect to pay in a separate article.

What Does a “Free Cruise” Really Cost?

This is probably the most important thing to understand before accepting a complimentary cruise offer.

The cruise fare may be free, but you could still spend several hundred dollars—or considerably more—on the rest of the vacation.

Your actual expenses will depend on the offer and sailing, but they may include:

  • Taxes and port expenses

  • Gratuities

  • Transportation to the cruise port

  • Parking or airfare

  • Pre- or post-cruise hotels

  • Drinks

  • Wi-Fi

  • Specialty dining

  • Shore excursions

  • Travel insurance

  • Cabin upgrades

  • Other onboard purchases

Margaritaville at Sea's Heroes Sail Free program is a good example. Its current free-cabin offer provides a $0 cruise fare for the first and second guests on eligible sailings, but taxes, fees and port expenses are still charged. Gratuities and onboard purchases are also additional.

So when you're comparing a complimentary cruise with a regular cruise deal, compare the total vacation cost, not simply the advertised cruise fare.

A $0 cruise that requires expensive airfare and a hotel could ultimately cost more than an inexpensive cruise departing from a port you can drive to.

How to Decide Whether a Free Cruise Offer Is Actually a Good Deal

Before accepting any complimentary or heavily discounted cruise, look at the entire offer.

Start with the sailing itself.

Is it a ship you actually want to sail on? Does the itinerary interest you? Can you travel on the available dates? Is the included cabin category acceptable?

Then calculate what you'll still have to spend.

If the offer requires you to fly across the country, stay in a hotel and take time off during an inconvenient week, the savings may not be nearly as impressive as they first appear.

On the other hand, a $0 or deeply discounted cruise departing from a port within driving distance could be an exceptional deal.

Don't Ignore Regular Cruise Sales

Here's something else worth remembering:

You don't have to qualify for a special rewards program to find an inexpensive cruise.

Cruise lines regularly offer promotions, and discounted sailings can sometimes compete surprisingly well with a so-called free cruise once you calculate the entire vacation.

That's why I would always compare the offer you've received with regular cruise prices before booking.

You might discover that your complimentary cruise really is an incredible bargain.

Or you might find another cruise with better dates, a better itinerary or a better cabin for relatively little money.

👉Compare current cruise fares, ships and itineraries through CruiseDirect before deciding which offer gives you the best value.

Free Cruise vs. Discounted Cruise: Which Is Better?

Don't automatically assume the offer with FREE across the top is the better deal.

Suppose you're offered a complimentary interior cabin on a sailing that isn't particularly convenient.

Meanwhile, another cruise line is offering a balcony cabin on an itinerary you really want at a substantial discount.

The second option may provide far more value to you even though it isn't technically free.

Consider:

  • Total out-of-pocket cost

  • Cabin category

  • Cruise length

  • Itinerary

  • Departure port

  • Transportation costs

  • Included perks

  • Travel dates

  • Upgrade costs

  • Cancellation restrictions

The goal isn't necessarily to take the cruise with the lowest advertised fare.

It's to get the best vacation for the money you're actually going to spend.

Can You Combine Free Cruise Offers With Other Discounts?

Sometimes—but don't assume you can.

Every program has its own rules.

Some complimentary offers allow you to pay the difference for an upgraded cabin. Others restrict which promotions or discounts can be combined.

For example, Margaritaville at Sea currently allows the value of an eligible Heroes Sail Free auto-assigned interior cabin to be applied toward a qualifying guest-selected cabin. Verified Heroes can also currently receive an additional 20% off qualifying fares when booking certain alternative sailings or staterooms.

Casino offers, MGM Rewards benefits and PLAYSTUDIOS rewards have their own terms and restrictions.

Always read the conditions attached to your specific offer before booking.

Save Money on the Rest of Your Cruise, Too

If you've managed to eliminate or dramatically reduce your cruise fare, don't give all those savings right back through unnecessary vacation expenses.

Bring the cruise essentials you know you'll use instead of buying things after you board.

A reusable water bottle, cruise luggage tag holders, travel organizers, wrinkle releaser, charging accessories and other small necessities are inexpensive to pack but can be annoying—or expensive—to replace during your trip.

Shore excursions can also add substantially to the cost of your vacation, and they're not normally included simply because your cruise fare was complimentary.

The Biggest Mistake to Avoid

There's one mistake I particularly don't want anyone making after reading this article:

Spending more money trying to earn a free cruise than the cruise would have cost in the first place.

This is especially important with casino offers.

If you already gamble for entertainment, receiving a complimentary cruise afterward can be a fantastic perk.

But don't start increasing your wagers because you're determined to earn a free cabin.

The same principle applies to credit-card rewards. Don't carry expensive credit-card debt simply to accumulate travel rewards.

And don't start spending money inside a free-to-play game solely because you're trying to reach a cruise reward faster.

The smartest free-cruise strategy is one that gives you value from something you were already doing—or can do without spending unnecessary money.

That's part of what makes PLAYSTUDIOS interesting. Its playAWARDS program currently has established cruise partnerships, including Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian has provided high-value complimentary cruise inventory through the rewards program.

Which Free Cruise Strategy Is Best for You?

There isn't one best way to get a free or heavily discounted cruise. The best option depends on what you already do, what you qualify for, and whether earning the reward requires you to spend money you wouldn't otherwise spend.

If you already enjoy gambling on cruises, cruise casino programs may be worth exploring.

If you already participate in MGM Rewards, check your benefits before booking Royal Caribbean or Celebrity. Qualifying Gold, Platinum, and NOIR members currently have annual cruise benefits, with the cabin category and cruise length varying by tier.

If you'd rather not gamble real money, PLAYSTUDIOS may be the most interesting option. Its playAWARDS program has offered complimentary and discounted cruise rewards, including high-value complimentary cruise inventory through Norwegian Cruise Line.

And if you qualify for Margaritaville at Sea's Heroes Sail Free, I'd check that before spending a dime trying to earn a cruise through another program. Current qualifying offers can provide $0 cruise fares for the first two guests in eligible interior cabins on select sailings after GOVX verification.

Is a Free Cruise Worth It?

Absolutely—if it's a cruise you actually want to take and the remaining expenses make sense.

A complimentary cabin can remove a substantial portion of the vacation cost, particularly if you're able to drive to the departure port and avoid airfare.

But don't let the word FREE make the decision for you.

Price out the entire trip and compare it with other cruises available during the same period.

You might discover that the free offer is an incredible bargain.

Or you might find a regular cruise sale that gives you a better ship, itinerary, cabin, or travel dates for only a little more money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are free cruise offers legitimate?

Yes. Legitimate complimentary cruise offers are available through cruise casino programs, loyalty partnerships, rewards programs, and special promotions.

However, make sure the offer comes from the cruise line or an established rewards partner. Be cautious about unsolicited messages claiming you've “won” a free cruise when you never entered a contest or participated in a rewards program.

Do you still pay taxes on a free cruise?

Usually, yes.

The exact charges depend on the offer, but taxes, fees, and port expenses commonly remain the passenger's responsibility.

For example, Margaritaville at Sea's current Heroes Sail Free terms state that its $0 cruise fare does not include taxes, fees, or port expenses.

Do you still pay gratuities on a free cruise?

Generally, yes.

Complimentary cruise fare doesn't normally eliminate gratuities or service charges.

Margaritaville at Sea, for example, specifically lists gratuities as an additional expense under its Heroes program.

Do you have to gamble to get a free cruise?

No.

Casino programs are one way to receive complimentary cruises, but they're certainly not the only way.

Rewards programs, loyalty partnerships, and eligibility-based promotions can also provide discounted or complimentary cruise fares.

Can you really earn cruise rewards by playing free games?

Yes.

PLAYSTUDIOS operates the playAWARDS rewards platform, and cruise rewards are part of its rewards ecosystem. Norwegian Cruise Line has offered complimentary cruise inventory through the program, for example.

We'll explain how the program works and which games you can use in our dedicated PLAYSTUDIOS guide.

Is Margaritaville at Sea really free for qualifying Heroes?

Yes—but again, free refers to the cruise fare.

Margaritaville at Sea currently offers qualifying GOVX-verified Heroes $0 cruise fares for the first and second guests in eligible interior cabins on select sailings. Taxes, fees, port expenses, gratuities, and onboard charges remain additional.

Can my spouse or companion sail free with me?

It depends on the program.

Under Margaritaville at Sea's current Heroes Sail Free offer, the $0 cruise fare applies to the first and second guests in an eligible cabin. The qualifying guest must be GOVX verified.

Casino and rewards offers have their own rules, so always check the terms attached to your particular offer.

More Free & Discounted Cruise Guides

There’s far more to saving on cruises than we can reasonably cover in one article. We’ve broken down several of these options in more detail so you can see how they work, who may qualify, and what to know before you try them.

We'll also be looking at another side of saving money on cruising: how to find last-minute cruise deals, unsold cabins, and genuine price drops without paying for an expensive subscription just to see the deals.

Final Thoughts

When I first started hearing people say they were getting free cruises, my reaction was probably the same as yours:

Free cruise? What?!

But once you start looking into it, you discover that complimentary cruise fares aren't nearly as mysterious as they sound.

Casino players can receive future cruise offers. MGM Rewards members may qualify for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity benefits. People can earn cruise rewards through free-to-play games. And eligible travelers can qualify for programs such as Margaritaville at Sea's Heroes Sail Free.

The trick is understanding why you're receiving the offer, what's actually included, and what you'll still have to pay.

Above all, don't spend a pile of money trying to earn something you could have simply purchased for less.

If you qualify for a legitimate free cruise—or earn one through something you already enjoy doing—take the savings and enjoy the heck out of it.

And maybe use some of the money you saved to do something memorable when you get to port.
