Explore the Cruise Port Area
If you don't want to venture far from the ship, there is plenty to see and do right near the cruise terminals.
You'll find:
Souvenir shops
Jewelry stores
Local crafts
Restaurants and bars
Tequila tastings
Live music
The port areas are easy to navigate and offer a fun introduction to the island. Just remember that prices are often negotiable, especially when purchasing souvenirs.
Visit a Beautiful Beach
Many cruisers head straight for the beach, and it's easy to see why.
Cozumel is known for its crystal-clear turquoise water and soft sandy beaches.
Popular beach clubs offer amenities such as:
Lounge chairs
Umbrellas
Pools
Food and drinks
Water sports
Many beach clubs sell day passes that include food and beverages, making them an easy option for cruise passengers.

Go Snorkeling or Diving
Cozumel is world-famous for snorkeling and scuba diving.
The island sits along the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world.
On our very first snorkeling trip in Cozumel, I learned an important lesson the hard way. I accidentally brushed against black coral and ended up with a painful sting. While it wasn't serious, it definitely taught me to pay attention to my surroundings underwater!
Even with that experience, snorkeling in Cozumel remains one of my favorite cruise activities because the water is incredibly clear and marine life is abundant.

Take a Tour Around the Island
One of our favorite ways to explore Cozumel is simply driving around the island.
On one visit, we rented what we jokingly called an "alien egg buggy" and spent the day exploring.
The eastern side of Cozumel feels completely different from the busy cruise port. You'll find:
Dramatic ocean views
Rocky coastline
Small beach bars
Scenic photo opportunities
Much lighter crowds
It's a side of the island many cruise passengers never get to see.

Visit the Lighthouse
If you enjoy sightseeing, consider visiting the Punta Sur area and lighthouse.
The views from the top are spectacular and provide a great perspective of the island's natural beauty.
It's also an excellent place for photos if you want something beyond the typical beach pictures.
Enjoy Authentic Mexican Food
One of the best parts of visiting Cozumel is the food.
Whether you're stopping at a local restaurant or grabbing a meal during an excursion, you'll find plenty of options including:
Fresh seafood
Tacos
Fajitas
Guacamole
Mexican street food
A cold drink and authentic Mexican lunch can be the perfect way to spend part of your day ashore.
Go Shopping
Cozumel offers plenty of shopping opportunities.
Popular items include:
Mexican vanilla
Handmade crafts
Jewelry
Tequila
Local artwork
Souvenirs
Just remember to compare prices and avoid making impulse purchases at the first store you visit.
Relax and Watch the Ocean
Sometimes the best plan is no plan at all.
Find a quiet spot, enjoy the ocean breeze, and soak in the Caribbean atmosphere.
Cruise vacations move fast, and Cozumel can be a wonderful place to slow down for a few hours before returning to the ship.
Our Favorite Part of Cozumel
While many visitors head straight to the beaches, our favorite memories come from exploring the island itself.
Driving around Cozumel, stopping at small beach bars, visiting the lighthouse, and seeing the rugged eastern coastline gave us a completely different perspective than simply staying near the cruise port.
It's one of the reasons we look forward to returning whenever a cruise itinerary includes Cozumel.
