Best Hotels Near the Athens Cruise

Port (Piraeus): Where to Stay Before Your Cruise

If your cruise is departing from Athens, there's a good chance you'll actually be boarding your ship in Piraeus, the major port city southwest of central Athens.

And if you're flying to Greece to begin your cruise, I strongly recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation.

International flights, missed connections, delayed luggage, and transportation problems are stressful enough without worrying about whether you're going to make it to the ship on time.

But deciding where to stay before an Athens cruise raises an important question:

Should you stay near the cruise port in Piraeusโ€”or stay in Athens and enjoy the city before your cruise?

The answer depends largely on when you arrive and how much time you have.

Where Is the Athens Cruise Port?

The main cruise port serving Athens is the Port of Piraeus, southwest of central Athens.

It's a major passenger port serving both cruise ships and ferries, and it's much larger than many first-time visitors expect.

That matters when you're choosing a hotel.

A property described as being โ€œnear Piraeus Portโ€ isn't necessarily within an easy walk of your cruise ship. Piraeus has several cruise terminals, including Terminal A (Miaoulis), Terminal B (Themistocles), and Terminal C (Alkimos).

My advice: don't choose your hotel based solely on the words โ€œnear the port.โ€

Once your cruise line provides your terminal information, check exactly where you'll be boarding. With luggage, a short taxi ride may be much easier than trying to walk.

Should You Stay in Piraeus or Athens Before Your Cruise?

This is really the first decision to make.

Stay in Piraeus if:

You're arriving only one night before your cruise, your flight arrives later in the day, or you simply want the easiest possible embarkation morning.

You'll wake up close to the port, have breakfast, grab your luggage and head to your terminal.

For a simple pre-cruise overnight, Piraeus wins on convenience.

Stay in Athens if:

You have two or more nights before your cruise and want to experience Athens.

If you've traveled all the way to Greece, spending some time seeing the Acropolis, wandering through Plaka, enjoying Greek food and exploring one of the world's great historic cities can turn your pre-cruise stay into part of the vacation.

Then you can head to Piraeus on embarkation morning.

Best Hotels Near the Athens Cruise Port in Piraeus

There are plenty of hotels in Piraeus, but these are the kinds of properties I'd consider for a pre-cruise stay.

Phidias Piraeus Hotel โ€” Best for Cruise Convenience

Phidias Piraeus Hotel is especially appealing for cruise passengers because it combines a convenient Piraeus location with something extremely useful when you're traveling with luggage: transportation around the port area.

Its complimentary shuttle service within Piraeus includes the port gates, which can remove much of the stress of figuring out how to reach the correct cruise terminal.

It's also near Marina Zea, where you'll find restaurants and a more pleasant waterfront atmosphere for your pre-cruise evening.

Best for: Cruisers who want an easy transition from hotel to ship.

Mitsis N'U Piraeus Port โ€” Best Stylish Option

If you'd rather start your vacation somewhere that feels a little more upscale, Mitsis N'U Piraeus Port is a contemporary four-star option near the port.

It has a more polished, modern feel than a basic overnight transit hotel and works particularly well if you want convenience without feeling as though you're simply sleeping beside a transportation hub.

Best for: Couples and cruisers who want a more stylish pre-cruise stay.

The Port Square Hotel โ€” Best for Public Transportation

The Port Square Hotel is particularly convenient for travelers using public transportation because of its location beside the Piraeus rail and metro connections.

That makes getting to Piraeus from Athensโ€”or traveling between Piraeus and other parts of the cityโ€”much easier.

Just remember that being near the station doesn't mean your cruise ship will be directly outside your hotel. Depending on your assigned cruise terminal, you'll probably still want a taxi with luggage.

Best for: Travelers who want easy metro and rail access.

Piraeus City Hotel โ€” Best for a Simple Pre-Cruise Overnight

Piraeus City Hotel is a practical choice if what you really need is a clean, convenient place to spend the night before boarding your ship.

You're in central Piraeus with access to restaurants, shops and transportation, without paying for amenities you may barely have time to use.

If your itinerary is basically:

Check in โ†’ eat dinner โ†’ sleep โ†’ board cruise ship

this kind of hotel makes perfect sense.

Best for: Cruisers looking for a straightforward one-night stay.

Piraeus Theoxenia Hotel โ€” Best Full-Service Hotel

For travelers who prefer a more traditional full-service hotel, Piraeus Theoxenia Hotel is another option to consider.

It's centrally located in Piraeus and provides more of a conventional upscale hotel experience while keeping you reasonably close to the cruise port.

Best for: Travelers who value a full-service hotel and larger-property amenities.

What About Staying in Central Athens?

If you have more than one night before your cruise, this is where the decision gets interesting.

Personally, if I had two or three nights before sailing and had never visited Athens, I'd stay in Athens rather than Piraeus.

You're already there. See it.

Some of the most convenient areas to consider include Plaka, Syntagma and Monastiraki.

You'll have much easier access to the Acropolis, restaurants, historic neighborhoods and major attractionsโ€”and then you can take a taxi or arrange transportation to Piraeus on embarkation morning.

Just don't cut your timing too close.

Athens traffic isn't something I'd gamble my cruise on.

Getting From Athens Airport to Piraeus

Athens International Airport offers several ways to reach Piraeus.

Metro

Metro Line 3 connects Athens International Airport with central Athens and Piraeus, making public transportation a viable option for travelers who don't mind handling their luggage.

Airport Bus

The X96 Airport Express route also connects Athens International Airport with Piraeus.

Taxi or Private Transfer

For cruise travelers carrying multiple suitcases, this may be the least stressful choice.

After a long international flight, there's something to be said for putting your bags in a vehicle and being delivered directly to your hotel.

And if two or more people are traveling together, compare the total cost before automatically assuming public transportation is the better deal.

Things to Do in Athens Before Your Cruise

If you've allowed an extra day or two before embarkation, don't spend all of it staring at the cruise port.

This is Athens!

Depending on your interests and how much time you have, you could visit the Acropolis and Parthenon, explore Plaka, visit the Acropolis Museum, wander through Monastiraki or take a guided food or history tour.

If you have a full extra day, you'll have even more options outside the immediate city.

Don't Forget Your Cruise Essentials

A European cruise can involve flights, hotel stays, sightseeing days and plenty of time away from the ship, so I like getting the practical stuff organized before leaving home.

That includes things like luggage accessories, charging gear, travel organizers and other items that can make the trip easier.

How Many Nights Should You Stay Before an Athens Cruise?

One night: I'd stay in Piraeus, especially if your only goal is getting safely to Greece before embarkation.

Two nights: This is where I'd seriously consider central Athens. You'll have time to actually see something before the cruise.

Three nights or more: I'd choose Athens unless there's a particular reason you want to stay near the port.

For travelers coming from the United States, arriving early has another benefit: it gives you some time to recover from the overnight flight and time-zone change before boarding your ship.

I'd much rather begin a Mediterranean cruise rested than spend embarkation day feeling like I've been hit by a truck.

My Pick: Athens or Piraeus?

For one night, I'd choose Piraeus.

The convenience would win.

I'd sleep near the port, have breakfast and take a taxi or hotel shuttle to the correct cruise terminal.

But with two or more nights, I'd choose Athens.

I'd rather spend that time seeing the Acropolis, walking through Plaka and having dinner somewhere wonderful than sitting beside a working port waiting for my cruise to begin.

Then on embarkation morning, I'd leave plenty of time and head to Piraeus.

Either way, the most important thing is simply getting to Greece before the day your ship sails.

Your cruise vacation should start with excitementโ€”not a race from the airport to the gangway.
