Lisbon Cruise Port: Where to Stay Before Your Cruise

If your cruise begins in Lisbon, arriving at least a day early is one of the smartest decisions you can make.

Not only does it give you a cushion in case of flight delays or lost luggage, but Lisbon is a destination worth exploring on its own. With historic neighborhoods, beautiful river views, incredible food, and centuries of history, spending a night or two here can turn the beginning of your cruise into part of the vacation.

The good news is that Lisbon's main cruise facilities are conveniently located along the Tagus River near the historic center, making it easy to find a hotel that's close to both the port and some of the city's most popular sights.

Where Is the Lisbon Cruise Port?

Lisbon's primary cruise facilities include the Lisbon Cruise Terminal and the Santa Apol贸nia Cruise Terminal, which are located along the waterfront near Lisbon's historic center.

Santa Apol贸nia also has its own train station and Metro access, making this one of the more conveniently located European cruise ports for travelers spending time in the city before sailing.

The cruise terminal area is approximately 8 kilometers from Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport.

For most pre-cruise travelers, the best areas to consider are Santa Apol贸nia and Alfama if staying close to the cruise terminal is the priority, or Baixa if you want a central location that's particularly convenient for sightseeing, restaurants, and exploring Lisbon before your cruise.

One important thing to remember:

Lisbon is hilly.

A hotel that looks very close on a map may involve cobblestones, stairs, or a steep climb. If you're traveling with large suitcases, don't automatically assume you'll want to walk to the port just because your hotel is nearby.

Best Hotels Near the Lisbon Cruise Port

The Editory Riverside Santa Apol贸nia Hotel

If convenience to the cruise port is your top priority, The Editory Riverside Santa Apol贸nia Hotel is one of the strongest choices.

The 5-star hotel is integrated into the historic Santa Apol贸nia railway station, putting guests right beside one of Lisbon's major transportation hubs and very close to the cruise terminal area.

The property combines the character of the historic station building with modern rooms, and some accommodations offer views toward the Tagus River.

This is an especially good choice for travelers who want to minimize transportation hassles on embarkation morning.

Best for: Cruise travelers who want to stay as close as practical to the port and transportation.

Hotel Riverside Alfama

Hotel Riverside Alfama offers a more moderately priced option in Lisbon's historic center.

This 3-star property sits near the Tagus waterfront at the edge of Alfama and Baixa, with easy access to Lisbon Cathedral, Pra莽a do Com茅rcio, restaurants, public transportation, and the historic center.

It's a particularly appealing option for travelers who care more about location and convenience than resort-style amenities.

Best for: Travelers looking for a comfortable, centrally located hotel without paying luxury-hotel prices.

AlmaLusa Alfama

AlmaLusa Alfama is a small boutique hotel near the riverfront in the historic Alfama district.

With only a limited number of rooms and suites, it offers a more intimate experience than a large city hotel while still providing excellent access to central Lisbon and the cruise terminal area.

Its location near Campo das Cebolas makes it especially attractive for travelers who want to explore Lisbon on foot before sailing.

Best for: Couples and travelers who prefer a smaller boutique hotel close to the historic center.

Memmo Alfama

For a romantic pre-cruise stay, Memmo Alfama is one of the most appealing choices.

This adults-only boutique hotel is tucked into the historic Alfama neighborhood and is known for its terrace overlooking Lisbon's rooftops and the Tagus River.

Lisbon Cathedral, S茫o Jorge Castle, and Pra莽a do Com茅rcio are all nearby.

Keep in mind that Alfama's historic streets can be steep and cobbled, so this isn't necessarily the hotel I'd choose if your primary goal is rolling several large suitcases directly to the ship.

Best for: Couples who want atmosphere, views, and a memorable Lisbon experience before their cruise.

Santiago de Alfama

If you're looking for something special before your cruise, Santiago de Alfama is a beautiful luxury option.

This family-run 5-star boutique hotel occupies a restored historic building in the heart of Alfama. Its smaller scale and historic setting make it feel very different from a large international hotel.

Again, the trade-off is Alfama itself: beautiful, atmospheric, and historic鈥攂ut also filled with hills, narrow streets, and cobblestones.

Best for: Luxury travelers and couples planning to spend extra time experiencing historic Lisbon.

Hotel da Baixa

You don't have to stay immediately beside the cruise terminal.

Hotel da Baixa is an excellent alternative for travelers who want to be in the center of Lisbon's sightseeing, restaurants, and shopping before boarding their cruise.

Located in the Baixa district, this highly rated 4-star boutique hotel gives you a more central city experience while keeping the cruise terminal within a relatively short taxi or rideshare trip.

Best for: First-time Lisbon visitors who want to explore the city before their cruise.

Should You Stay in Alfama or Baixa?

For most cruise travelers, I'd choose between these two areas.

Stay in Alfama or Santa Apol贸nia if:

  • Being close to the cruise terminal is your priority.

  • You love historic neighborhoods.

  • You want easy access to the waterfront.

  • You don't mind hills, cobblestones, and narrow streets.

Stay in Baixa if:

  • You're spending one or two days sightseeing before the cruise.

  • You want plenty of restaurants and shops nearby.

  • You prefer a somewhat easier area for walking.

  • You don't mind taking a short taxi or rideshare to the ship.

For most first-time visitors arriving a couple of days early, Baixa is probably the best overall choice.

If you're arriving late the night before the cruise and simply want maximum convenience on embarkation morning, I'd lean toward Santa Apol贸nia.

How Far Is Lisbon Airport From the Cruise Port?

Humberto Delgado Airport is approximately 8 kilometers from the Lisbon Cruise Terminal.

Actual travel time will depend on traffic and the location of your hotel, but Lisbon is compact enough that getting from the airport to the historic center and cruise area is relatively straightforward.

With cruise luggage, I would personally favor a taxi, rideshare, or pre-booked private transfer rather than trying to manage multiple bags on public transportation.

Should You Arrive in Lisbon a Day Early?

Absolutely.

For an international cruise, I would never intentionally schedule a flight to arrive on embarkation day if arriving earlier were an option.

Flights get delayed. Connections get missed. Bags don't always arrive when you do.

Arriving at least one day early gives you breathing room.

Arriving two days early is even better if you'd like to actually experience Lisbon rather than simply sleep there.

That extra day gives you time to explore Alfama and Baixa, visit Bel茅m, enjoy Portuguese food, or take a day trip without worrying about getting back to a ship that's leaving that afternoon.

Things to Do in Lisbon Before Your Cruise

Lisbon is one of those cities where arriving early feels like an extension of the cruise itself.

Depending on how much time you have, you might:

  • Explore the narrow streets of Alfama.

  • Visit S茫o Jorge Castle.

  • Walk through Pra莽a do Com茅rcio.

  • Ride one of Lisbon's famous historic trams.

  • Visit Bel茅m Tower and Jer贸nimos Monastery.

  • Try a traditional pastel de nata.

  • Take a day trip to Sintra.

  • Visit Cascais and the Portuguese coast.

If you have a full day available, this is also a great opportunity to book a guided Lisbon experience rather than trying to squeeze everything into a cruise port day.

Getting to the Cruise Terminal on Embarkation Day

Even if your hotel appears close enough to walk, think about your luggage before making that decision.

Lisbon's cobblestone streets can be beautiful when you're sightseeing and considerably less charming when you're pulling a heavy suitcase over them.

A short taxi or rideshare may be worth every penny on embarkation morning.

Before leaving your hotel, also confirm the exact terminal or berth listed on your cruise documents rather than assuming every ship uses exactly the same location.

Final Thoughts

Lisbon is one of the easier European cities for combining a pre-cruise hotel stay with actual sightseeing.

If staying close to the ship matters most, look around Santa Apol贸nia and Alfama.

If you're arriving a couple of days early and want to experience more of Lisbon, Baixa gives you an excellent central base while still keeping you within easy reach of the cruise terminal.

Whichever area you choose, I strongly recommend arriving before embarkation day.

Instead of beginning your vacation worrying about flight delays and watching the clock, you can wake up in Lisbon, enjoy breakfast, and head to the ship when you're ready.

That's a much better way to start a cruise.
