Portsmouth Cruise Port: Where to Stay Before Your Cruise

If your cruise begins in Portsmouth, arriving at least a day early is one of the easiest ways to start your vacation without unnecessary stress.

Portsmouth is a historic waterfront city on England's south coast, with a long maritime history and plenty to see before you sail. It's home to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, HMS Victory, the Mary Rose, Gunwharf Quays, and the unmistakable Spinnaker Tower.

More importantly for cruise travelers, Portsmouth International Port is an active embarkation and turnaround port, so staying nearby the night before your cruise can make embarkation morning considerably easier.

Where Is the Portsmouth Cruise Port?

Cruise ships use Portsmouth International Port, located at George Byng Way in Portsmouth. The port has direct access from the M275 and nearby rail connections.

One thing that's important when choosing a hotel is that Portsmouth International Port is not the same thing as Portsmouth Harbour or Port Solent.

You'll see all three names when searching for accommodations, so don't assume that a hotel with "harbour" or "port" in its name is necessarily right beside your cruise terminal.

Fortunately, Portsmouth is compact enough that several areas work well for a pre-cruise stay.

Best Hotels Near the Portsmouth Cruise Port

Holiday Inn Express Portsmouth – Gunwharf Quays

For travelers who want to combine a pre-cruise hotel with sightseeing, Holiday Inn Express Portsmouth – Gunwharf Quays is one of my favorite choices.

The hotel sits within the Gunwharf Quays waterfront complex, surrounded by restaurants, shops, and entertainment. Portsmouth Harbour railway station and several of the city's major attractions are also nearby.

Portsmouth International Port is about a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

That makes this an especially good option if you're arriving early enough to enjoy Portsmouth rather than simply sleeping there before boarding your ship.

Best for: First-time Portsmouth visitors who want restaurants, attractions, and waterfront atmosphere before their cruise.

Holiday Inn Portsmouth

Holiday Inn Portsmouth is another solid choice, particularly if you prefer a full-service hotel.

The hotel is close to the city center and historic waterfront attractions and offers an on-site restaurant, fitness center, indoor pool, and parking. Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard are also nearby.

Best for: Families and travelers who prefer more hotel amenities.

Premier Inn Portsmouth City Centre

If you're looking for a straightforward, moderately priced pre-cruise hotel, Premier Inn Portsmouth City Centre is worth comparing.

Its central location puts you near transportation and gives you easy access to Portsmouth's attractions, restaurants, and waterfront without paying specifically for a luxury hotel experience.

Best for: Travelers looking for convenience and value.

Premier Inn Portsmouth Port Solent

Premier Inn Portsmouth Port Solent can be a good option for travelers arriving by car.

The hotel offers parking, air-conditioned rooms, an on-site restaurant, and easy road access. It's situated near Port Solent rather than Portsmouth International Port, so you'll still need transportation to your cruise terminal.

Best for: Travelers with a car who prefer easy road access and parking.

Premier Inn Portsmouth Dockyard

Another option worth comparing is Premier Inn Portsmouth Dockyard, particularly if you're arriving early enough to explore Portsmouth's maritime attractions.

The Dockyard area puts you closer to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and the city's waterfront attractions rather than directly beside Portsmouth International Port. Premier Inn currently lists the Dockyard property among its Portsmouth hotels.

Best for: Travelers who want to explore Portsmouth's maritime history before sailing.

Where Should You Stay Before a Portsmouth Cruise?

For most cruise travelers, I would choose between Gunwharf Quays/city center and a hotel closer to the major roads leading toward Portsmouth International Port.

Stay near Gunwharf Quays if:

  • You're arriving a day or two early.

  • You want restaurants and shopping within easy reach.

  • You want to explore Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

  • You'd like your pre-cruise stay to feel like part of the vacation.

Stay farther north if:

  • You're driving to Portsmouth.

  • Parking and easy road access are more important.

  • You're arriving late and primarily need somewhere to sleep.

  • You don't mind taking a taxi to the cruise terminal.

For someone visiting Portsmouth for the first time, I'd lean toward Gunwharf Quays or the central waterfront area.

You're still a short ride from the cruise port, but you'll have much more to enjoy outside your hotel.

Should You Stay in London or Portsmouth?

If you're flying into England several days before your cruise and want to visit London, absolutely spend some time there.

But for the night immediately before the cruise, I would rather stay in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth International Port says London is approximately 60 miles away. Heathrow and Gatwick are around 1 hour 20 minutes from the port, while Southampton Airport is much closer at approximately 22 miles.

Traveling to Portsmouth the day before your cruise eliminates the stress of trying to cover that distance on embarkation morning.

Enjoy London first.

Then head to Portsmouth, check into your hotel, have dinner, get some sleep, and wake up already in your departure city.

How Do You Get to Portsmouth?

Your best option will depend on where you're coming from.

Travelers may reach Portsmouth by:

  • Train

  • Private transfer

  • Taxi

  • Rental car

  • Coach

Portsmouth International Port has direct road access from the M275 as well as nearby rail connections.

If you're arriving with several suitcases after an international flight, convenience may be worth paying a little more for.

Should You Arrive in Portsmouth a Day Early?

Absolutely.

If you're flying internationally, I wouldn't intentionally schedule your arrival for the same day your cruise departs.

Flights can be delayed. Connections can be missed. Luggage doesn't always arrive when you do.

Even if you're already vacationing in London, traveling to Portsmouth the day before embarkation gives you a much more relaxed start to the cruise.

Instead of spending cruise morning worrying about trains, traffic, and luggage, you're already there.

Things to Do in Portsmouth Before Your Cruise

Portsmouth is particularly good for cruise travelers because its attractions fit naturally with the maritime theme of the trip.

If you arrive early, consider visiting:

  • Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

  • HMS Victory

  • The Mary Rose Museum

  • Spinnaker Tower

  • Gunwharf Quays

  • Southsea

  • Portsmouth's waterfront

Spinnaker Tower is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks, while Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is home to some of Britain's most important naval history.

You could easily turn an overnight stay into an extra day of vacation rather than simply waiting for your ship.

Getting to the Cruise Terminal on Embarkation Day

Even if your hotel isn't far from Portsmouth International Port, I would take a taxi or pre-arranged transportation when you have cruise luggage.

The port is a working passenger and commercial facility, and being geographically close doesn't necessarily mean you'll want to walk there dragging suitcases.

Before leaving the hotel, check your cruise documents for your ship and terminal information.

Final Thoughts

Portsmouth is a great city for spending the night before a cruise because you don't have to choose between convenience and having something interesting to do.

If you're arriving early enough to explore, Gunwharf Quays and the central waterfront area would be my first choice. You'll have restaurants, shopping, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, and other attractions nearby while remaining only a short ride from Portsmouth International Port.

If you're driving or arriving late, a hotel farther north with easier road access and parking may make more sense.

Most importantly, arrive before embarkation day if you can.

You'll wake up already in Portsmouth, have breakfast, gather your luggage, and make the short trip to your ship without worrying about getting across southern England on cruise morning.
